Human skull in backpack found by corrections work crew near I-5 north of Salem

A work crew cleaning trash along Interstate 5 near Salem found a small backpack that contained a human skull, Oregon State Police said Wednesday.

The crew overseen by the Oregon Department of Corrections was working on Monday along the northbound lanes at milepost 260, the Keizer exit, when someone found a “suspicious object,” the state police said in a press release. Troopers took possession of the backpack and found the skull inside.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner now has the skull, believed to be that of a woman in her late 30s to 40s. It had no identifiable features.
